Philip Auerbach attended and graduated from Ohio State University, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He also boxed in two consecutive years of Golden Gloves of America tournament. After college he volunteered for the United States Army, and was honorably discharged for his service. He then continued on to attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School on a full scholarship, where he was on Law Review and graduated with honors.

Since 1960, Mr. Auerbach has been passionately involved in litigation, both in criminal and civil matters. In the earlier years of his litigation he tried many criminal cases, including a number of murder trials. Phil has tried over 150 civil cases to their completion, obtaining many million dollar verdicts and settlements, in cases where the defense originally offered little to no compensation. Over the past years, Phil’s loyalty to honest methods has obtained many groundbreaking results in the courtroom.

A few of Mr. Auerbach’s civil cases have served as litigation touchstones, breaking norms and setting new standards. For example, in Pierson v. Frederickson he tried the first case in the nation in which a witness could testify to the speed of a vehicle, based solely on sounds he heard. In Bennett v. T&T Distributing, Mr. Auerbach presented the first case in which NJ recognized and applied “negligence in hiring,” to a distributor. He also had one the leading cases in “Public Entity Law”, with his work on McGowen v. Borough of Eatontown. He argued many important cases in front of the NJ Supreme Court, most notably Katzen v. Bayshore Community Hospital, involving a HIV and blood donor matter, and as Brett v. Great American, where Mr. Auerbach pioneered the interpretation of the “Ski Law Statute.” P.V. v. Camp Jaycees. The leading case on “choice of laws.” Verdicchio v. Ricca, where the New Jersey Supreme Court, reinstated an 8 million dollar jury verdict.

Mr. Auerbach has contributed greatly to the legal community not only through his work in the courtroom, but also in the classroom. He and another attorney were the first two lawyers in the state of NJ chosen to teach trial lawyers in NJ trial techniques. Mr. Auerbach wrote a book entitled “Try It”, and designed a Skill and Methods course, the completion of which was required for the admission to the NJ State Bar. He has taught “trial techniques” and “methods” at law schools and colleges across the nation, including Rutgers Law School, Institute for Continuing Legal Education, Mississippi University, University of New Mexico, Michigan University, University of Tennessee, and Willamette University. At one time Mr. Auerbach taught trial skills and lectured alongside many influential members of the legal community, such as the Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the 7th circuit, and the lead trial attorney in Pacific Gas and electric class action, the famed case Erin Brockovich worked on. Phil’s mentorship transcends his time in the class room,  during his careers he has established on ongoing legacy in founding organizations such as the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, a state trial organization still influential in New Jersey legal affairs today, as well as the Monmouth County Inns of Court, an organization which continues to teach local lawyers trial skills.
Over the course of Mr. Auerbach’s successful career, he has been recognized in many different capacities, such as the TANJ award for trial excellence, and the Clapp award for Teaching. Over time he was also appointed many prestigious titles such as, “One of The 10 Best Civil Trail Lawyers in New Jersey, named by the National Law journal, Lawyer of the Year by the New Jersey Bar Association, and was once listed as the “Who’s Who in American Law” and “Who’s Who in America.” Mr. Auerbach is, and has always been, a caring and involved member of the legal and local community. At this point in Mr. Auerbach’s career, he continues to do work with the Inns of Court and TANJ. Currently, Mr. Auerbach is “Of Counsel” at the firm of Shebell and Shebell, where he continues to inspire by offering his valuable insight, advising and working with the determined trial attorneys of Shebell and Shebell.

What Are People Saying About Our Attorneys?

Fantastic

Thomas Shebell was an A M A Z I N G attorney for our personal injury case. He made himself available to all our questions and concerns during the whole process. We were very nervous about it all and he set our fears to rest. You instantly believe in him after your first meeting. He was serious yet empathetic, had superb legal knowledge, and great judgement. His staff is also top notch. Words cannot describe how wonderful a lawyer we believe Thomas Shebell to be and would highly recommend him.

My hero, my attorney who is always there for me!

Tom Shebell has represented me and my family members in several cases. Tom is the most prepared lawyer I have ever seen, and demands respect in and outside of the court room. His staff is amazing and never makes you feel as if you are bothering them. I always feel that I am his most important client, and he always takes my call. If he is busy, I am reassured that he will get right back to me and he does. His knowledge of the law and research on your case is impecable, and will never give up until he gets the results that he feels are the best for you. Although he is the most professional attorney I have ever worked with, he refers you call him Tom (not Mr. Shebell), and I am most comfortable calling him Tommy. His cell phone is on his answering service, to comfort you and assuring you that you can reach him if necessary, no matter what. I will never retain another lawyer, unless it is a case that he cannot handle. That has never happened to me. Unfortunately, Tommy is handling a very emotional case for my family, and whenever we discuss it our meet together he is very comforting to us. For a family man, and extremely busy attorney to handle matters like this, it truly takes a special type of person, and extraordiinary human being. If anyone take my advise, Tom Shebell, III is the only attorney that should be called first, and believe me you will not make another call. As I said in my title, he is my true "hero"!

I am Grateful I was able to have Thomas Shebell for my Lawyer

Thomas Shebell and his staff were very good to work with. They were always professional, but also very down to earth and real. I always felt that my best interest was their main concern. I was always able to call with questions and concerns and was never made to wait or to feel like I was inconveniencing anyone. I always felt that they knew instantly who I was and what was going on with my case. In the end, Thomas was able to get the best possible settlement for me. I am very grateful to have been treated like my case truly mattered to them.

Ferocious Fighter

Tom Shebell and his firm came highly recommended by several reputable people in the community. I come from a family deeply rooted in law enforcement, so I greatly appreciate that Tom grew up with the law as well, hailing from a family of highly respected attorneys. He easily grasped the complexity of my case and eased my concerns, while ferociously fighting for me. One of the moments that stands out to me the most was when I voiced a concern over possible retaliation and he said, "they're going to have come through me first." I wholeheartedly believed him then and now. There is no one else I'd want in my corner than Tom Shebell.

A League Of His Own

Mere words cannot express my gratitude to Thomas F Shebell III. He took on a case, that other attorneys would shy away from and fought vehemently for my husband, myself and our daughter. His tenacity is only surpassed by his kindness and compassion for his clients well-being. I would recommend Mr. Shebell III to anyone who may need an attorney to guide them through a difficult time and see them through to a successful end. Many thanks again to him and his staff!!
